Ukhozi is a girls’ organisation based in Joe Slovo Park (Milnerton) that aims at creating a safe space to empower and
educate the young women growing up in a disadvantaged community, with few recreational resources or role models.
We aim to inspire these young women to unleash their potential as powerful, productive, caring and responsible members of
our communities.
We hosted our second Girls Seminar on the 16th June 2018, to integrate and empower 150 girls from eight neighbouring schools as part of Youth month celebrations. Our theme for the seminar was “You Have a Voice”.
We partnered with Sinenjongo High School, to make this day a success. The programme entailed a Life Coach, youth speakers, educational and information stalls and performances by the learners.
A great time we had!
The weekly uKhozi group sessions aim to provide a platform for young girls to share their stories, fears and dreams;
cultivate their talents and empower them with skills for self-growth, among others. Issues raised by children attending
these sessions indicate poor or lack of relationships between them and their primary caregivers. This could be attributed
to the state of poverty in the communities they live where the home environment is not always conducive for having
confidential conversations. Moreover, caregivers are often unable to spend time with their children to find out what is
happening in their lives due to work. The children are therefore unable to engage their parents due to a lack of time or
because they feel ashamed or scared to engage them. The above led to the launch of Mother & Daughter Indaba, which seeks to
draw attention to the value of positive relationships with the aim of encouraging children and mothers to bond and
communicate effectively.
The first launch took place at Sinenjongo High School in celebration of Women ‘s Day and the second one at Inkwenkwezi
High School in celebration of Heritage Day. We are planning to host the event yearly.
Another beautiful way to end the year. On the 1st of December 2018, we hosted our second award ceremony. The aim of the
awards is to acknowledge, appreciate and motivate our girls. We got gift cards with an amount of R150 for prizes. 60 girls
attended the event. The top award, uKhozi Award and a R1000 voucher, went to Zusiphe Mtsitshe. The voucher is meant to help
the winner when they start at tertiary. We are proud to announce that she enrolled at University of Cape Town to study Film
& Drama.
We hosted our third Stand Up & Stand Out Girls Seminar on the 8th of June 2019, with ±150 girls from neighbouring schools
as part of Youth month Celebrations. We partnered with Sinenjongo High School to make this day a success.
The theme of the seminar is “Be Heard”. It’s empowering the girls to use their Voice, to speak out, speak the truth, to be the voice of the unheard. To speak out against issues affecting young girls and women, to use their talents as a voice to communicate messages of change and be advocates of change in their communities and society at large.
